Dave is teaching alongside fellow Cowboy Artists of America member Chad Poppleton in a five-day Plein Air to Studio workshop at Scottsdale Artists' School, part of the school's Cowboy Artists of America Week.
The first day is spent in the studio with introductory slide shows, followed by a couple of days painting outdoors. Dave focuses on creating depth in landscape work, while Chad focuses on painting horses and other subjects from life. Learning to simplify and interpret color relationships is a primary focus, along with values, shapes and edges.
The second half of the workshop moves into the studio, where students design a studio painting from their plein air studies and photos taken at the scene.
